Footage courtesy of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@aviva\"> @aviva.<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The decision follows a successful pilot, which saw the UK&#8217;s largest insurer work with a panel of UK-based developers on sustainable projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Insurers have quoted mass timber projects with 800% higher premiums<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/overcoming-challenges-in-mass-timber-construction-adoption\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Insurance and lack of financial incentives<\/a>&nbsp;are obstacles to mass timber adoption, with Avia&#8217;s commitment now a springboard to drive decarbonisation across the built environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/a-big-step-forward-insurer-opens-door-to-more-engineered-timber-buildings\">As reported by Architects Journal<\/a>, insurers&#8217; nervousness over timber in construction is regularly cited as one of the main reasons why concrete has not been replaced by timber in many projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some brokers have quoted mass timber projects up to 800% higher than traditional ones. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/timber-could-replace-90-of-concrete-in-construction\/\">Last week,<\/a> Wood Central reported on a new 90% of concrete construction could be replaced by timber over the coming years with new products, financial incentives and greater education driving to greater adoption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to&nbsp;Alastair Ogle from Waugh Thielston Architects, it &#8220;will improve baseline knowledge and discussion and help people gain relevant approvals and insurance for their timber buildings.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Waugh_Thistleton_Cambridge_Heath_Site_Tim_Crocker-indesx-1600x1067-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Waugh Thistleton's Cambridge Heath site. (Image credit: Supplied to Architects Journal by Piercy&amp;Co)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2021, Aviva published its <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aviva.com\/newsroom\/news-releases\/2021\/07\/seven-steps-to-help-protect-UK-homes-businesses-and-communities-from-climate-change-impacts\/#:~:text=Aviva%E2%80%99s%20Building%20Future%20Communities%20report%20sets%20out%20seven,industry%20needed%20to%20protect%20communities%20for%20the%20future.\">Building Future Communities report.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the report, Aviva called for stronger planning regulation, greater collaboration on research across the building process and encouraging and incentivising property resilience to aid recovery.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By incorporating leading risk management strategies beyond current building regulations, Mr Winslow said, &#8220;Aviva (can) include greater use of mass timber in its projects.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Will other insurers follow suit?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>Architects Journal has asked other insurers whether they will follow Aviva\u2019s direction on engineered timber in commercial buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A spokesperson for Zurich, who contributed to and sponsored the Mass Timber playbook, said it would continue looking at buildings on a project-by-project basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They said: \u2018We recognise the role mass timber can play in a move to more sustainable construction methods. Due to the individual nature of mass timber risks, we consider each on its own merits, taking into account a project\u2019s scale, size, quality and risk mitigation measures.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AXA Commercial\u2019s mid-market and customer risk management director, Dougie Barnett, said: \u2018[We have] been working with architects and developers for the past two years on several large projects incorporating engineered timber components.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Essential to this engagement has been a focus from the outset that we will commit appropriate risk engineering input to guide the design, ensuring that we have an acceptable risk during both the build and the occupancy phase of the project.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added: \u2018Each case is considered on its individual merits to assess what capacity we are willing to commit.
