{"id":8452,"date":"2023-07-13T10:33:57","date_gmt":"2023-07-13T00:33:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/?p=8452"},"modified":"2024-10-21T20:30:53","modified_gmt":"2024-10-21T10:30:53","slug":"nzs-largest-all-timber-building-is-taking-shape-in-tauranga","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/nzs-largest-all-timber-building-is-taking-shape-in-tauranga\/","title":{"rendered":"NZ&#8217;s Largest All-Timber Building Is Taking Shape in Tauranga"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>New Zealand&#8217;s largest all-timber building is progressing with an NZD 18.9 million building consent over the superstructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/bay-of-plenty-times\/news\/tauranga-city-council-and-willis-bond-green-build-tipped-to-be-world-leading\/A6LSXJIIBGMGRX7BRZFCCFKCV4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Announced in June 2022<\/a>, the Tauranga City Council&#8217;s new eight-storey <a href=\"https:\/\/90devonport.wordpress.com\/2023\/05\/22\/may-2023\/\">commenced construction in January 2023<\/a> and is part of a NZD 304 million Civic Precinct project Te Manawataki o Te Papa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wood Central understands the project will use 2000 tonnes of mass timber, including 134 piles of up to 24 metres of wood in the largest all-timber installation in New Zealand history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will combine cross-laminated timber (CLT), glulam and laminated veneer lumber (LVL) and opens in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project is part of a greater Civic Precinct &#8211; including a Civic Whare (public meeting house), library, museum and exhibition space, and is expected to take eight years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"cxSX0eJEWj8\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Te Manawataki o Te Papa \u2013 the heartbeat of Te Papa\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cxSX0eJEWj8?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>In June 2022, the council announced its master plan for the precinct. (Image Credit: Wills Bond)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Commission chairwoman Anne Tolley said such sustainable outcomes were front of mind when considering this new building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We wanted to push the boundaries to design a wholly sustainable, future-focused workplace which maximises the use of natural materials such as the exposed timber columns which celebrate the uniqueness of the building,&#8221; Tolley said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/bay-of-plenty-times\/news\/tauranga-city-council-civic-redevelopment-plans-to-address-carbon-footprint\/HF6TOQZRV2OZJZQVMGAGDIO4IU\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a council meeting<\/a>&nbsp;discussing the building&#8217;s design, Scion sustainable architect Andrea Stocchero said there was little reason not to build with wood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Building with wood is a great option, both for long-term carbon storage and for the broader social, economic and environmental advantages that wood provides on top of other technical, functional and biophilic benefits.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In that same meeting, the programme manager of the Civic Redevelopment Programme, Mike Naude, said timber was &#8220;the perfect option&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The council says its new offices are set to be an &#8220;impressive addition&#8221; to Tauranga&#8217;s cityscape and hoped to help revitalise the city centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Developed by Willis Bond<a href=\"https:\/\/warrenandmahoney.com\/portfolio\/90-devonport-road\"> <\/a>and constructed by LT McGuinness, the 10,000-square metre leased building would feature rainwater harvesting, electric vehicle charging and facilities to encourage active transport options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Our goal is always to keep as much carbon in the ground as possible and to walk with a light footprint. It is really exciting.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latest consent means people would start to see the timber office building come &#8220;out of the ground&#8221; from late next week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While he would not disclose the total cost of the build, Ellison said it was a &#8220;significant&#8221; project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We think this will be a significant part of the future of how commercial buildings are constructed.
