the largest all-timber office tower in the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The nine-storey project, located on the former site of Holborn Town Hall, will boast a glulam frame along with cross-laminated timber slabs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/piercyco-wins-approval-for-uks-largest-full-timber-structure-office\">As reported by Architects Journal<\/a>, the existing basement car park, and slab substructure will be preserved in the 13,900m\u00b2 development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project also involves refurbishing a mid-20th-century building tucked behind the street frontage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project is an important milestone for the UK timber industry, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/wooden-skyscrapers-are-on-the-rise-but-are-they-a-fire-hazard-l2m887rxs\">with hesitency<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/overcoming-challenges-in-mass-timber-construction-adoption\/\">regulation obstacles after the Grenfell disaster.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Piercy&amp;Co, the embodied carbon rating of the building&#8217;s timber structure and its high-performance facade should exceed the<a href=\"https:\/\/ukgbc.org\/resources\/net-zero-carbon-energy-performance-targets-for-offices\/#:~:text=Following%20direct%20engagement%20with%20industry%20and%20analysis%20of,2050%20to%20help%20the%20UK%20achieve%20net%20zero.\"> UK Green Building Council\u2019s Building the Case for Net Zero Office baseline target<\/a> by more than 50 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Net Zero Office baseline target is an initiative by the UK Green Journal)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Piercy&amp;Co director Harry Bucknall explained: \u2018Of course, the decision to replace a building is not ever taken lightly, and in this instance is a consequence of detailed whole-life carbon studies, concluding that this was the most environmentally responsible approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018[With this approach] comes the responsibility of designing a building that sets a high standard for ecologically responsible construction, and a design that is of a quality and adaptability that ensures the building has the best possible chance of still being here in 100 years.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The building will use 100 percent renewable grid electricity and showcase rooftop photovoltaic panels.
