{"id":4903,"date":"2023-04-18T13:16:27","date_gmt":"2023-04-18T13:16:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/?p=4903"},"modified":"2024-12-23T00:38:31","modified_gmt":"2024-12-22T14:38:31","slug":"key-stakeholders-inspect-mass-timber-projects-in-olympic-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/key-stakeholders-inspect-mass-timber-projects-in-olympic-city\/","title":{"rendered":"Key Stakeholders Inspect Mass Timber Projects in Olympic City"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Government regulators, key developers and builders flew 955 km from Adelaide to the Olympic City today to pay homage to mass timber \u2018royalty\u2019 \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aurecongroup.com\/projects\/property\/25-king\">25 King.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The delegation, led by<a href=\"https:\/\/www.premier.sa.gov.au\/the-team\/clare-scriven-mlc\"> South Australian Minister for Regional Development and Forest Industries Clare Scriven<\/a>, took part in an intensive two-day inspection of engineered timber structures and research facilities across Brisbane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An initiative of the <a href=\"https:\/\/safpa.com.au\/\">South Australian Forest Products Association<\/a>, delegates on the CLT timber study tour were welcomed at 25 King by executives of the builder-owner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lendlease.com\/au\/\">Lendlease<\/a>, anchor tenant&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aurecongroup.com\/\">Aurecon <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timberqueensland.com.au\">Timber Queensland<\/a>, guest of the tour dinner on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most innovative buildings to ascend in Brisbane\u2019s inner city and opened in 2018 as part of the $2.9 billion&nbsp;renewal of the Brisbane RNA showgrounds, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archdaily.com\/906495\/the-tallest-timber-tower-in-australia-opens-in-brisbane\">25 King was for a time the&nbsp;largest mass timber office building by gross floor area in the world.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As it stands&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/inside-fs\/delivering-mission\/apply\/worlds-tallest-timber-building-opens#:~:text=WISCONSIN%20%E2%80%94At%2025%20stories%20high%E2%80%94284%20feet%E2%80%94the%20Ascent%20MKE,Innovations%20program%20and%20Forest%20Products%20Laboratory%20fire%20testing.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Milwaukee\u2019s Ascent MKE Building<\/a> is the world\u2019s tallest timber building, surpassing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldconstructionnetwork.com\/projects\/mjosa-tower-mjostarnet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Norway\u2019s 18-story Mj\u00f6sa Tower<\/a> in July 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theurbandeveloper.com\/articles\/milligan-group-plans-hunter-pitt-st-sydney-cbd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the proposed Milligan Group\u2019s hybrid timber&nbsp;<\/a>tower and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/architectureau.com\/articles\/worlds-tallest-hybrid-timber-tower-to-be-built-in-sydney\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Atlassian Central Tower<\/a> under construction, <a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/australia-champions-decarbonisation-with-worlds-tallest-mass-timber-towers\/\">Australia is set to retake the mantle. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"3U9zq9XujtI\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"25 King Street, Brisbane - A Visionary Timber Building\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3U9zq9XujtI?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Introducing 25 King, the building that for a time was the tallest timber building in the world. The resulting effect of an exposed timber structure, smaller intimate column-free floor plates, and generous windows produces a completely new typology for the commercial office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hynetimber.com.au\">Hyne Timber<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/xlam.com.au\">Xlam<\/a> supplied the sustainable engineered products sourced from plantation-grown timber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/defence.nioa.com.au\/about-nioa\">NIOA <\/a>is the largest Australian-owned supplier of munitions to the Australian and New Zealand defence forces and law enforcement agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All four mass timber buildings were designed by <a href=\"https:\/\/kirk.studio\/\">Richard Kirk Architect<\/a> &#8211; who has established itself as an expert in mass timber construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SA Forestry Centre of Excellence<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>Clare Scriven, who started a lively questions and answer session at 25 King, was formerly&nbsp;State Manager South Australia and National Manager, Softwood Manufacturing, for the&nbsp;Australian Forest Products Association&nbsp;(2016-17).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She is enthusiastic about the&nbsp;strategic plan for the <a href=\"https:\/\/pir.sa.gov.au\/primary_industry\/forestry\/forestry_centre_of_excellence#:~:text=The%20South%20Australian%20Government%20has%20committed%20%2415%20million,Products%20Innovation%20%28NIFPI%29%20and%20other%20forestry%20funding%20streams.\">Forestry Centre of Excellence launched by the South Australian Government<\/a>, the vision behind a $15 million 10-year collaborative project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The centre, the first of its kind in South Australia, will promote long-term research and development capability to enhance the Green Triangle\u2019s economic prosperity \u201cgenerating more jobs and investment in the region\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The strategic plan was developed with the region\u2019s forest and timber sector and creates a framework to place the Forestry Centre of Excellence as a central hub that focuses on innovation, sustainability and the creation of new market opportunities from Australia and across the globe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The centre\u2019s activities will support the full forestry supply chain including plantation management, harvesting and haulage and timber processing. It also aims to cover the technical, safety, and training aspects relevant to those sectors, while building greater connections with First Nations people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Areas identified as forest research priorities include water, fire, breeding, wood products, data analytics, carbon, silviculture and environmental management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Note quid pro quo <\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>CLT timber study tour delegates were proud to boast that veteran Adelaide developer Barrie Harrop of Thrive Construct will build the world\u2019s tallest timber hotel in the city centre, and a second timber hotel in regional Whyalla, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/property\/commercial\/world-s-tallest-timber-hotel-to-open-in-adelaide-in-2024-20220727-p5b4xp\">as part of a $300 million investment in tourism infrastructure in South Australia.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"728\" height=\"410\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/7a099e69835b4d5a086405d1d55893a1.webp\" alt=\"In July 2022, Cox Architecture realised designs for the world's tallest timber hotel at 187 Victoria Square in Adelaide..
