The wood in question is <a href=\"https:\/\/eoburton.com\/pages\/keruing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Keruing<\/a>\u2014one of hardwood&#8217;s best-kept secrets\u2014with the tropical species (native to Indonesia and Malaysia) sold extensively in Australia&#8217;s building merchant network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Keruing timber is low maintenance, hardwearing and ideal for outdoor furniture use,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woodsolutions.com.au\/wood-species\/hardwood\/keruing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to WoodSolutions &#8211; Australia&#8217;s go-to resource for technical information<\/a>, with the strong and durable wood used in various applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Common uses include internal flooring, protected framing and boards, internal joinery and mouldings, lining, panelling and framework. Congress (has already) emphasised that Apitong, sourced from tropical rainforests, is unsustainable. A bipartisan group of senators has urged the Department of Defence to accelerate the switch, citing Red Oak&#8217;s environmental benefits,&#8221; according to a US Hardwood Federation letter to the US Fish and Wildlife Service last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the EU, more than 5.3 million tonnes of Meranti timber products &#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bunnings.com.au\/products\/building-hardware\/timber\/mouldings\/meranti-durian-mouldings?msockid=3aaf6522112560912d4371b11079610e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sold as mouldings by Australian merchants<\/a> &#8211; have been sold in the world over the decade to 2023 &#8211; with overharvesting to meet high demand the primary reason that 65% of species are threatened, and 86% have seen declining numbers: &#8220;This raises serious questions about the future availability of these species and the need for stronger trade controls,&#8221; according to a spokesperson who spoke of the push to add the species to the CITES listing last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"4NJ4sNTgWgo\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Victorian logging ban to have \u2018disastrous\u2019 production and environmental impacts\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4NJ4sNTgWgo?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>The Australian building supply chain is increasingly reliant on imported hardwoods in the wake of the decision by successive state governments to cease forest operations in state forests. Footage courtesy of SkyNews.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, Wood Central today spoke to an expert connected to the supply chain who said the push to add <a href=\"https:\/\/eoburton.com\/pages\/keruing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Keruing<\/a> (and Apitong) to the CITES list could have major implications for the Australian supply of much-needed construction materials &#8211; given the push by the Victorian, WA and (now) NSW state governments to lock up supply of hardwood timbers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;At a time when the United States is <em>freeing up production of its forests<\/em>, Australia is locking ourselves out of our resource.
