{"id":23521,"date":"2025-02-20T22:31:06","date_gmt":"2025-02-20T12:31:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/?p=23521"},"modified":"2025-02-21T17:43:17","modified_gmt":"2025-02-21T07:43:17","slug":"thats-an-order-trumps-tariffs-to-hit-global-lumber-from-april-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/thats-an-order-trumps-tariffs-to-hit-global-lumber-from-april-2\/","title":{"rendered":"That&#8217;s an Order \u2014 Trump&#8217;s Tariffs Could Hit Global Lumber from April 2"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>More than US $50 billion worth of lumber and other forest products could get much more expensive <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/5155132-trump-lumber-wood-tariffs\/amp\/\">after Donald Trump announced plans for a global tariff of 25% on all products imported into the United States &#8220;over the next month or so.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking to reporters on Air Force One, Trump said the tariffs would take effect from April 2nd &#8211; in time for the start of the Spring season &#8211; and will concinde with others duties placed on imported cars, semiconductors and pharmaceuticals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Trump, the new tariffs will generate huge revenues for the United States &#8211; the world&#8217;s leading consumer&nbsp;of industrial roundwood and the&nbsp;second largest consumer of sawn wood, wood-based panels, and paper and paperboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new threat comes weeks after the president threatened to hit Canadian and Mexican lumber &#8211; which makes up 46% of the US total imports &#8211; with tariffs over concerns about illegal migration, fentanyl and trade: &#8220;I&#8217;ll be putting the tariff of 25% on Canada, and separately, 25% on Mexico, and we&#8217;ll have to do that.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;We have all the oil we need, we have all the trees we need, meaning the lumber.&#8221; <\/p>\n<cite>President Trump last month threatened to hit Canadian (and Mexican) lumber with tariffs &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/thats-a-deal-trump-and-trudeau-agree-to-pause-on-lumber-tariffs\/\">before agreeing to a 30-day pause with Candian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on February 4th<\/a>.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Report: Trump\u2019s Tariffs to Add Billions to Cost of Timber Products<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/report-trumps-tariffs-will-add-billions-to-cost-of-timber-products\/\">In December,<\/a> the Peterson Institute of International Economics reported that Trump&#8217;s tariffs would add billions to the price of timber products. Calculating the impact of tariffs, the institute said that potential tariffs of 60% on Chinese imports, 25% on USMCA partners like Canada and Mexico, and 10% on all other nations would have major implications for the global trade of forest products: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"868\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/WFHN3N55eNZGpugUmGjR-1-1068x905.jpg-1024x868.webp\" alt=\"WFHN3N55eNZGpugUmGjR 1 1068x905.jpg\" class=\"wp-image-23522\" as a free trade tax,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.piie.com\/blogs\/realtime-economics\/2024\/no-trade-tax-free-trumps-promised-tariffs-will-hit-large-flows\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to a report prepared by Julieta Contreras, Mary Lovely and Jing Yan, who warned that low-income Americans would be hit hardest by the tariffs, which will add at least $25 billion to the cost of timber imports alone.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report also revealed that forest products, which are subject to near-zero tariff rates across the vast majority of countries where the US has free trade agreements, will be among the industries hardest hit by tariffs revealing that <a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/china-is-flooding-global-markets-with-low-cost-timber-furniture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the tariff on Chinese furniture and plywood will jump<\/a>&nbsp;from 16.2% to 60%,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/usa-slaps-huge-duty-on-canadian-lumber-timber-price-rises-next\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">while tariffs on more than US $3 billion worth of Canadian softwood lumber jumping from 14.54% to 25%.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"
