The Shack Built from 200-Year-Old Power Poles"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>One of Australia&#8217;s best-kept secrets, a custom-built timber cabin built from repurposed electricity posts that go back to Australia&#8217;s first European colonists could be one of the worlds best examples of repurposed timber architecture&#8230;with the Marra Marra Shack, &#8220;floating above&#8221; a steep elevation at the junction of the Hawkesbury River and Berowra Creek &#8211; less than an hour from the centre of Sydney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Designed by Leopold Banchini Architects, the BAL-FZ-rated 2-bedroom, 1-bath dwelling is a past winner of<a href=\"http:\/\/timberdesignawards.com.au\"> the Australian Timber Design Awards\u2014Recycled Timber Category (sponsored by Kennedy Timbers)<\/a>. It combines recycled ironbark telegraph poles and spotted gum in the exposed floor and ceiling post-and-beam system with pine plywood manufactured into laminated veneer lumber (LVL) to create a lightweight floor floating the waterway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>&#8220;The shack is almost entirely constructed from timber,&#8221; according to the Swiss-based Leopold Banchini, who said two carpenters could only access the work site via boat: &#8220;The materials had to be small and light enough to fit on a barge and lifted without heavy machinery, timber was the perfect choice.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"ncy1qGivEeg\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Inside A Hidden Eco-Friendly Timber Cabin: A Swiss Architect\u2019s Masterpiece (House Tour)\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ncy1qGivEeg?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Only reachable by boat, the shack is a hidden eco-friendly timber cabin that embraces a quiet lifestyle removed from the bustle of city living. (Photo Credit: Rory Gardiner)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Cocooned inside the Marramarra National Park, it sits inside a sloping 809 square metre block and &#8220;is the perfect paradise for canoeing, kayaking, swimming, boating, bushwalking and birdwatching,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realestate.com.au\/property-house-nsw-berowra+waters-145696116?sourcePage=rea%3Abuy%3Asrp-map&amp;sourceElement=listing-tile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to an REA listing<\/a> earlier this year. &#8220;To minimise disruption&#8230; the shack appears to float above the sloped site by stepping the floor structure and cantilevering the floor bearers off the timber posts,&#8221; Banchini said. &#8220;The stepped floor defines the architectural program and the structural grid.
