(Photo Credit: Beril Kapusuz, courtesy of METU Urgent Design Studio)<br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I design houses and public buildings, but disaster relief is my life&#8217;s work,&#8221; says Shigeru Ban, who is credited with creating a <a href=\"https:\/\/worldarchitecture.org\/community\/links\/?id=fhppg&amp;type=architecture-news&amp;waurl=https:\/\/worldarchitecture.org\/architecture-news\/fzhph\/-i-want-to-use-my-knowledge-and-experience-for-general-public-says-shigeru-ban.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Paper Log House<\/a>&nbsp;to help victims of the recent Turkey-Syria earthquake and is now raising money to <a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/shigeru-bans-new-mass-timber-extension-for-ukraine-hospital\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">construct a surgical wing for Ukraine&#8217;s largest hospital, built from cross-laminated timber.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, the country&#8217;s largest hospital-based hospital in Lviv is reaching capacity and urgently needs expansion,&#8221;&nbsp;Mr Ban said. The six-storey building will use mass timber as its base material. Renders show a rectangular block with a gridded facade and an expressed-timber entrance canopy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90925065\/heres-what-quantum-computing-is-and-how-its-going-to-impact-the-future-of-work-according-to-a-software-engineer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">In addition to the hospital<\/a><\/em>, Shigeru Ban has also developed a Styrofoam Housing System (SHS) to provide affordable housing solutions for thousands of Ukrainians who have fled conflict zones &#8211; working with Polish architect Hubert Trrammer and former student Jerzy Latka to open 319 cardboard and cloth cubicles for refugees in March last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m like a doctor. (Photo Credit: \u0130rem Su Elia\u00e7\u0131k, Voluntary Architects\u2019 Network\/Facebook)<br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to humanitarian work, Mr Ban&#8217;s studio is behind some of the world&#8217;s most iconic designs\u2014<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/how-shigeru-bans-infinite-maldives-dives-into-indian-ocean\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">including a one-of-a-kind Maldives development<\/a>, which will see 44 timber villas propelled into the Indian Ocean via an enormous timber walkway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Billed as Infinite Maldives, it will be developed at Male Atoll\u2014a small atoll 645km off the coast of Sri Lanka\u2014and will &#8220;embrace the Maldivian vernacular,&#8221; according to Mr Ban.
