{"id":18745,"date":"2024-06-28T17:09:52","date_gmt":"2024-06-28T07:09:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/?p=18745"},"modified":"2024-10-21T20:17:47","modified_gmt":"2024-10-21T10:17:47","slug":"swedens-new-candy-factory-is-a-mass-timber-wintergarden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/swedens-new-candy-factory-is-a-mass-timber-wintergarden\/","title":{"rendered":"Sweden&#8217;s New Candy Factory is a Mass Timber &#8216;Wintergarden&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Wood is at the heart of the historic L\u00e4kerol candy factory redevelopment project in the Swedish town of G\u00e4vle and in good measure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But according to its design consultant, Singapore-based architect Jason Pomeroy, it involves much more than cross-laminated timber (CLT), as he describes it as a \u201cwintergarden.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s become an affordable, eco-centric housing and mixed-use development, also described as &nbsp;\u201can environmentally friendly and socially inclusive public housing project\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Way back in pre-pandemic days, 2019, Pomeroy Studios announced its involvement in this unique redevelopment project, designed to have a variety of apartment types available for lease to promote inter-generational bonding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The seven-storey residential block comprise 54 apartments, while the 15-storey residential block has 67, with sizes ranging from studios to four-room flats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1002\" height=\"539\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Capture3-1.jpg\" alt=\"Capture3 1\" class=\"wp-image-18750\" srcset=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Capture3-1.jpg 1002w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Capture3-1-300x161.jpg 300w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Capture3-1-768x413.jpg 768w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Capture3-1-696x374.jpg 696w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Capture3-1-781x420.jpg 781w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Capture3-1-600x323.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1002px) 100vw, 1002px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Renders courtesy of Pomeroy Studio<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While the first sod of the redevelopment took place in 2020 \u2013 it was more of a tree-planting event to show its green emphasis &#8211; the project really started coming alive during 2023. That\u2019s when various tenants \u2013 retailers and residents &#8211; started moving in.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Much more is on the cards this year, 2024, when more shops and homes are being established.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The developer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gavlegardarna.se\">AB Gavleg\u00e5rdarna<\/a> says it won\u2019t be until 2026 when it expects it to be in its finished state:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The candy factory is now a car-free and lively district, with green walking paths and many natural meeting places. Here, modern and sustainable houses share blocks with historic factory buildings. The commercial activities contribute to creating a new and unique part of G\u00e4vle. Sales hall, grocery store, outdoor dining, market square, office, Bed &amp; Breakfast, preschool and school &#8211; here there is life and movement for a large part of the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prof Pomeroy, who teaches classes on the sustainable built environment at the University of Cambridge, University of Nottingham, James Cook University Singapore and King Saud University, says the glazed atrium of the seven-storey block and orangery atop the 15-storey building are also designated as recreational spaces for residents to meet and socialise with one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"m0diKDVONYI\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Professor Jason Pomeroy \u2014 &#039;We want to create green cities&#039; | The Climate Connection\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/m0diKDVONYI?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Pomeroy Studio, headed by Professor Jason Pomeroy, will restore the Lakerol brick factory in Gavle, making it into a hub that includes retail, food and beverage outlets, commercial offices and a hotel, as well as construct two new residential buildings. Footage courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@britishcouncil\">@britishcouncil.<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Echoing the project\u2019s strong emphasis on CLT, Pomeroy confesses to his love of timber. \u201cFor centuries it\u2019s been an important part of the construction process and only now are we really enjoying its resurgence as a means of reducing our carbon footprint.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m delighted that we were given the opportunity to change the cultural perception of what homes should be like in the re-embrace of this warm, sustainable material\u201d, he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was just one of the international projects we discussed when I interviewed Jason Pomeroy after the launch of his latest book \u201cHardware Software Heartware: Digital Twinning for more Sustainable Built Environments\u201d. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I did wonder whether by emphasising the use of \u201cthe digital twin\u201d can the architect still make sure he maintains his\/her creative role and that the human element is maintained. I also express my personal fears of digital technology \u2018running rampant\u2019 and the importance of finding a balance between the analogue and digital\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As an architect at heart, he still enjoys holding a pen and sketching an idea \u2013 \u201clet\u2019s call this the heartware\u201d &#8211; however, he admits there will be times where the \u2018software\u2019 yields ideas that the architect may not have been able to comprehend spatially.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe ability to thus unlock \u2018prompts\u2019 for new thinking is exciting, and it is this human touch that can still be maintained to provide a greater sense of authenticity and hopefully people-centric\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s not the final word from this enterprising and architect.
