{"id":14171,"date":"2024-01-16T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-01-16T01:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/?p=14171"},"modified":"2024-10-21T20:20:05","modified_gmt":"2024-10-21T10:20:05","slug":"russian-invasion-slashes-2023-global-timber-prices-exports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/russian-invasion-slashes-2023-global-timber-prices-exports\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Russia&#8217;s Invasion Slashed Global Timber Prices &#038; Exports"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Global hardwood prices are surging, softwood prices are softening, and exports are shrinking, with the Russia-Ukraine conflict and a decade-low demand from China blamed for an increasingly uncertain and volatile market for forest products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, the supply of global timber, fuelled by the trade of timber from Russia, Canada and the United States, fell for the first nine months &#8211; with Russian export volumes dropping by more than 33%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is the latest takeaway from the Wood Resources International (WSI) Global Forest Summary, which reports that the war has slashed prices and shipments for the year to September 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It comes as export prices for Russian timber have almost halved since early 2022, with volumes crashing by more than 25% as sanctions \u2013&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/western-forest-companies-offload-plants-across-russia-as-timber-shortage-looms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">which have not only seen trade bans but all Western Companies&#8217; exit from Russian assets<\/a>, a<a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/russias-2023-timber-volume-drops-as-chinese-demand-plummets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;freefall in Chinese demand<\/a>&nbsp;and a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/putin-to-use-conflict-timber-to-strengthen-russian-ruble\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">weakening of the ruble against the dollar&nbsp;<\/a>leading to a perfect storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The main items among \ud83c\uddf7\ud83c\uddfaRussia\u2019s exported wood products are sawn timber, round timber &amp; plywood.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/TradeinFigures?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#TradeinFigures<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/2r0RnJAEM8\">pic.twitter.com\/2r0RnJAEM8<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Trade Policy IMEF (@AnalyticsIMEF) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AnalyticsIMEF\/status\/1413507137909805057?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 9, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, Finland &#8211; which, until the sanctions,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/amid-russias-import-ban-finland-carves-bold-new-direction\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">was Russia&#8217;s third-largest trading partner for imported forest products&nbsp;<\/a>&#8211; has made up some of the shortfall,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/english.news.cn\/20240116\/0eb5d7f6bfe04b71984783b120de0d91\/c.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">raising concerns that the increased use of forests for sawlog production is undermining the country&#8217;s commitment to carbon neutrality.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to sanctions, Russia&#8217;s trade is isolated to just ten countries \u2013 China, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Uzbekistan, Iran, Kyrgyzstan, the United Arab Emirates, Azerbaijan, and Tajikistan whilst domestic demand remains sluggish,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/russian-conflict-timber-continues-to-finance-ukraine-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">with Wood Central reporting that Russian timber continues to infiltrate global supply chains.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/russia-timber-EIA-fotor-20240219151051-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Russian timber in Suifenhe, China.
