{"id":13630,"date":"2023-12-14T16:18:00","date_gmt":"2023-12-14T05:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/?p=13630"},"modified":"2024-10-21T20:27:17","modified_gmt":"2024-10-21T10:27:17","slug":"will-singapores-first-buddhist-monastery-spur-a-green-building-trend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/will-singapores-first-buddhist-monastery-spur-a-green-building-trend\/","title":{"rendered":"Will Singapore&#8217;s First Buddhist Monastery Spur Green Building Boom?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kmspks.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery<\/a>, which was highly commended last week by the Architecture Masterprize, is an excellent example of how mass timber is now being used to drive greener construction in Singapore and across the Asia-Pacific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Singapore&#8217;s first and largest Buddhist temple, it holds major significance to the 3.07 million ethnic Chinese who live in the city-state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The building, which, when constructed, was for the time one of the largest timber structures in Southeast Asia, merges traditional Chinese architecture with modern sustainable building techniques.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This includes a massive 1500-square-metre pavilion and facade made from glue-laminated timber supplied by Venturer Timberwork,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/how-the-maldives-fari-islands-used-mass-timber-to-achieve-zero-carbon-ready-certification\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">also behind the Fari Islands development in the Maldives.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Kevin Hill, CEO of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/venturertimberwork.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Venturer Timberwork<\/a>, the highly detailed project used more than 300 cubic metres of timber and was installed on-site &#8220;super fast.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"UkA7Fq2J8gc\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery, Singapore.
