{"id":13545,"date":"2024-03-24T02:52:24","date_gmt":"2024-03-23T15:52:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/?p=13545"},"modified":"2024-10-21T20:19:44","modified_gmt":"2024-10-21T10:19:44","slug":"could-bcs-new-building-code-spark-timber-boom-in-vancouver","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/could-bcs-new-building-code-spark-timber-boom-in-vancouver\/","title":{"rendered":"British Columbia\u2019s New Codes Spark Mass Timber Drive in Vancouver"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Canada&#8217;s third-largest province has changed its construction code to allow British Columbia developers to build all-timber buildings up to 18 storeys &#8211; a 50% increase permitted under the old code.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is the latest step in a push that has accelerated mass timber across British Columbia and Canada, with the Trudeau government spearheading a push to include the new code changes in the National Building Code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The British Columbia Building and Fire Codes (BC Codes 2024), <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/industry\/construction-industry\/building-codes-standards\/bc-codes\/2024-bc-codes#About-the-BC-Codes-2024\">which came into effect on March 10, 2024<\/a>, is part of a sweep of programs aimed at reducing embodied carbon and decarbonising construction &#8211; and comes as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/how-cop28s-timber-coalition-tackles-carbon-in-buildings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canada last year became a signatory of the coalition of countries that will incentivise wooden construction to meet net-zero targets.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Until now, British Columbia only allowed mass timber buildings up to 12 storeys &#8211; higher than Australia (8 storeys), the UK (6 storeys) and New Zealand (3 storeys), with reforms bringing the province in line with the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"EGSgXUdomWs\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Making More Mass Timber Wood Products for Buildings in BC\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EGSgXUdomWs?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">British Columbia is looking to mass timber production and construction to drive its CleanBC Roadmap to Net Zero &#8211; footage courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@GovernmentofBC\">@GovernmentofBC<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Ravi Kahlon, British Columbia&#8217;s Minister of Housing, &#8220;the mass timber building code changes align with our recent work to deliver more homes near transit hubs by allowing taller buildings and more sustainable housing options near transit.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wood Central understands the changes apply to all residential, commercial and institutional buildings in the province, including Vancouver, one of Canada&#8217;s most densely populated cities, characterised by high-rise and mixed-use development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also coincides with the City of Vancouver expanding mass timber use in mid-rise and high-rise construction, <a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/is-vienna-house-the-prototype-for-mid-rise-multi-res-projects\/\">including Vienna House, a collaboration with the City of Vienna in Austria.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image_6483441-5-fotor-20240220171752-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Vienna House aims to demonstrate that affordable, climate resilient, thoughtfully designed homes should be available to everyone.
