{"id":12388,"date":"2023-11-02T11:38:00","date_gmt":"2023-11-02T00:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/?p=12388"},"modified":"2024-10-21T20:27:30","modified_gmt":"2024-10-21T10:27:30","slug":"malaysia-to-lead-with-bamboo-pellets-in-renewable-energy-drive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/malaysia-to-lead-with-bamboo-pellets-in-renewable-energy-drive\/","title":{"rendered":"Malaysia to Lead with Bamboo Pellets in Renewable Energy Drive"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Bamboo pellets will be added to Malaysia\u2019s future energy mix after Sarawak signed heads of agreements with several timber companies, dramatically increasing its bamboo production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, \u201cthe state-owned Sarawak Timber Development Corporation will supply a raw material to Permata Ferroalloys (one of the businesses involved) to complement wood charcoal (biomass) and to encourage the local community to work in bamboo production.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the agreement, the state-owned Sarawak Timber Development Corporation and Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) will supply bamboo pellets to local businesses, a source of biomass, as part of the state\u2019s commitment to decarbonise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBamboo pellets can be similarly used like charcoal,\u201d the Deputy Premier said, \u201ccoal is a hydrocarbon, whereas pellets are a fibre.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The agreement is the first of its type and is part of Malaysia\u2019s push to become a global hub for bamboo production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/malaysias-sarawak-eyes-global-bamboo-hub-with-rd\/\">In June<\/a>, Sarawak released its post-COVID-19 Development Strategy for 2030, which targeted cultivating 10,000 hectares of commercial bamboo production to be managed by Rich Venture Plantation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/image-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/image-2.png 1024w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/image-2-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/image-2-768x512.png 768w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/image-2-696x464.png 696w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/image-2-630x420.png 630w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/image-2-600x400.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg (standing, left) witnesses the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation and Rich Venture Plantation Sdn Bhd in Kuching on August 2, 2023. (Photo Credit: Photo by Muhammad Rais Sanusi)<br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time, Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg said the challenge was to \u201cdevelop more land for bamboo plantation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bamboo has been likened to sago palm, which is easy to grow and can complement other raw resources such as timber to generate income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf we plant a lot of them, they will multiply quickly, and they can be used as raw material for us to manufacture or create downstream products,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Premier also stressed the importance of research and called on STIDC and its partners to conduct regular studies to pave the way to drive innovation to the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Globally, investment in bamboo is booming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In August, Forest giant Plantations International announced that it was widening its mix of forest investments to include bamboo in Sao Paulo, Brazil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company is actively developing commercial bamboo plantations in various parts of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These locations include Indonesia, Colombia, Kenya, and Brazil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company has made significant investments in the development of bamboo for various purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Premier Johari, Sarawak is fortunate to have an ecosystem that enables bamboo to thrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe state would need a proper masterplan to identify areas to plant the bamboo.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bamboo pellets will be added to Malaysia\u2019s future energy mix after Sarawak signed heads of agreements with several timber companies, dramatically increasing its bamboo production.
