{"id":12035,"date":"2023-10-24T10:05:00","date_gmt":"2023-10-23T23:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/?p=12035"},"modified":"2024-10-21T20:27:33","modified_gmt":"2024-10-21T10:27:33","slug":"global-deforestation-rises-again-as-asia-shows-signs-of-hope","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/global-deforestation-rises-again-as-asia-shows-signs-of-hope\/","title":{"rendered":"Global Deforestation Rises Again as Asia Shows Signs of Hope"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>More than 6.6 million hectares of forest were lost to deforestation in 2022, an increase of 4% compared to 2021,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forestdeclaration.org\/resources\/forest-declaration-assessment-2023\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to Forest Declaration<\/a>, a coalition of environmental organisations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to its most recent assessment, <a href=\"https:\/\/forestdeclaration.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/2023ForestDeclarationAssessment.pdf\">&#8220;Off Track and Falling Behind&#8221;<\/a>, it claims the rate of deforestation was &#8220;21% higher than needed to eliminate deforestation by 2030.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the first time, the report offers a comprehensive blueprint for saving forests, &#8220;defining for the first time the pathways to stop destroying forests, to meet global commitments and bring our forests back to life,&#8221; according to co-author Mary Gagen from the WWF-UK.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"672\" height=\"569\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-32.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12036\" srcset=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-32.png 672w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-32-300x254.png 300w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-32-496x420.png 496w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-32-600x508.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 672px) 100vw, 672px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/global-deforestation-surges-despite-cop26-commitments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">It supports research from the University of Maryland\u00a0<\/a>that reported that an area of tropical forest the size of Switzerland was lost last year as tree losses surged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report&#8217;s title references commitments made by over 100 global leaders at COP26&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2295703-over-100-countries-at-cop26-pledge-to-end-deforestation-by-2030\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to end deforestation by 2030<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Supporting the assessment,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwf.org.uk\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the WWF<\/a>\u00a0released a report overnight outlining the steps needed to halt deforestation &#8211; calling for countries to end harmful subsidies and change international trade systems to halt salt of deforested products. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Why is the world still barrelling in the wrong direction on forests every year? The answer becomes obvious if you look at what we invest in,&#8221; according to&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/climatefocus.com\/team\/erin-d-matson\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Erin Matson<\/a>, who co-authored the assessment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We are investing in activities that are harmful to forests at far higher rates than those that are beneficial for forests.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the report is not all bad news, with bright sparks emerging in the Asia-Pacific.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"645\" height=\"541\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-33.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12037\" srcset=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-33.png 645w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-33-300x252.png 300w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-33-501x420.png 501w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-33-600x503.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 645px) 100vw, 645px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/australia-china-lead-the-world-in-reforestation-according-to-fao\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Last week<\/a>, Wood Central reported that Australia and China are leading the world in reforestation, with the FAO reporting growth rates of 1,937,000 hectares and 446,000 hectares per year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Oceania recorded the second-largest average annual net gain in forest area (after Asia) in 2010\u20132020, at 423 000 hectares, reversing the region&#8217;s negative trend of previous decades,&#8221; the FAO reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-36-1024x473.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12042\" srcset=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-36-1024x473.png 1024w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-36-300x139.png 300w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-36-768x355.png 768w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-36-696x322.png 696w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-36-909x420.png 909w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-36-600x277.png 600w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-36.png 1056w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The new report claims that &#8220;well over 50 countries are on track to eliminate deforestation within their borders by 2030.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;For instance, in tropical Asia, the only region close to the pathway for achieving zero gross deforestation, Indonesia and Malaysia have achieved sustained reductions in deforestation.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"648\" height=\"489\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-35.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12041\" srcset=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-35.png 648w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-35-300x226.png 300w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-35-557x420.png 557w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-35-80x60.png 80w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-35-600x453.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 648px) 100vw, 648px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Indonesia, for example, has reduced primary tropical forest loss more than any other country since recording an all-time high in 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s a similar story in Malaysia. In both countries, oil palm corporations are acting, with some 83% of palm oil refining capacity now operating under no deforestation, no peatland and no exploitation commitments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Sarawak, Malaysia&#8217;s most extensive state forests cover 91% of its land area \u2013 or about 9.57 million hectares of forest area. In 2022,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.globalforestwatch.org\/embed\/widget\/treeLossPct\/country\/MYS\/14\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>it lost 59,000 hectares of natural forests, a drop of almost 300% from a decade ago<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Both developed and developing countries have demonstrated the transformative power of political will and dedicated action.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Their efforts have led to dramatic and, in some cases, sustained reductions in deforestation rates,&#8221; the report said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Ms Matson, of the 6.6 million hectares lost last year, 4.1 million hectares were primary forest.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;These are the irreplaceable old-growth forests, which are priceless.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But deforestation &#8216;isn&#8217;t the only issue, she says.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"655\" height=\"474\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-34.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12038\" srcset=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-34.png 655w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-34-300x217.png 300w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-34-580x420.png 580w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-34-324x235.png 324w, https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-34-600x434.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 655px) 100vw, 655px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The remaining forests are degraded in North America and Europe thanks to&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2196213-forests-are-becoming-less-able-to-bounce-back-from-wildfires\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wildfires<\/a>&nbsp;and partial logging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We hardly ever talk about the fact that forests in these regions, and every world region, are not just being cleared, but where they are still standing, they&#8217;re losing carbon, their structural integrity, losing biodiversity year after year,&#8221; Ms Matson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The WWF is now calling for governments to stop investing in and subsidising activities causing deforestation and encourage activities that help forests.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, &#8220;there is abandoned farmland in Brazil that could be put back into production with some investment,&#8221; Ms Matson said, &#8220;which would lessen the pressure to cut down more forest.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also claims that trade reform is needed <a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/worldwide-impact-eu-passes-law-banning-deforestation-products\/\">&#8211; with the EU Deforestation Regulation taking the lead in ensuring that deforested products are eliminated from all global supply chains.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It shouldn&#8217;t be left to consumers to try to work out if the products they buy are forest friendly or not&#8221;, according to Mike Barrett from the WWF UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Governments should ensure that products that drive deforestation are unavailable in consumer markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We should be able to buy any products in the UK knowing that they are deforestation-free.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More than 6.6 million hectares of forest were lost to deforestation in 2022, an increase of 4% compared to 2021,&nbsp;according to Forest Declaration, a coalition of environmental organisations.
