(Photo Credit: ABARES)<br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Australian Forest Product Association Acting CEO Natasa Sikman said the continued decline in plantations &#8220;is extremely concerning and a reminder that collectively, industry, federal and state governments and other decision and policymakers must work together to get more timber tree planted in the ground.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Australia&#8217;s plantation estate has fallen by over 250,000 hectares over the past decade, with &#8220;Australia importing over $6 billion worth of wood products,&#8221; according to Ms Sikman, &#8220;and rely on imports for up to 25% of the timber we need to build houses.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/timber-construction-essential-for-2b-social-housing-fund\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">In June<\/a>, Wood Central reported that Australia could have a 250,000 timber-frames shortage by 2035 unless the government invested heavily in plantation establishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accordingly, &#8220;as the government looks to build 1.2 million new houses over the next five years, our reliance on imported timber will dramatically increase,&#8221; Ms Sikman said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Challenges with plantation establishment are seed production<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/1-trillion-reforestation-plans-at-risk-due-to-seed-shortages\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;is putting the global reforestation targets at risk.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Short-sighted policy decisions in the&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/1-trillion-reforestation-plans-at-risk-due-to-seed-shortages\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">US<\/a>, the&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/uks-net-zero-at-risk-after-missing-tree-planting-targets\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UK,&nbsp;<\/a>and&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/nz-must-plant-700000-hectares-of-new-forests-for-climate-target\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NZ<\/a>&nbsp;are putting COP26 climate commitments at risk.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last month, Wood Centreal revealed that NZ was 700,000 hectares short of its climate targets, whilst in the UK,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ttjonline.com\/news\/westminster-report-sets-out-case-for-timber-production-in-englands-forests-11017953\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>&nbsp;CEO of Confor<\/em><\/a>, Stuart Goodall, said, &#8220;a failed generation of policymaking has led to a decline in wood production in England.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nonetheless, Ms Sikman points to the UK&#8217;s&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/6194dfa4d3bf7f0555071b1b\/net-zero-strategy-beis.pdf?utm_source=miragenews&amp;utm_medium=miragenews&amp;utm_campaign=news\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Net-Zero Strategy<\/a>, which prioritises timber use.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The key element of the UK strategy is to increase public demand for sustainably sourced timber through procurement policies and encouraging research into barriers to the uptake of timber.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Indeed,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/king-charles-tours-the-circular-timber-plant-using-balmoral-wood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">King Charles visited James Jones and Sons<\/a>&nbsp;where he discussed the significant benefits of productive forestry, a company which partners with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hyne.com.au\/article\/hyne-group-seals-partnership-with-uk-based-james-jones-sons?utm_source=miragenews&amp;utm_medium=miragenews&amp;utm_campaign=news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Australian-based Hyne Timber and XLam.<\/a>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"569\" src=\"https:\/\/woodcentral.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/jamesjames-royalvisit-17.5728763feb60fdd9ccd53b3cd88f1ca7-1-1024x569.gif\" alt=\"King Charles last visited the sawmill in 1999 with the relationship between James Jones &amp; Sons and the Royal Family going back decades. (Photo Credit: Supplied)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On Wednesday, Wood Central reported that King Charles III visited the<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jamesjones.co.uk\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>&nbsp;James Jones and Sons<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;sawmill in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, with the processor sourcing more than 150,000 tonnes of certified timber from the Balmoral Estate&#8217;s 1200 hectares of productive forests.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The visit demonstrated the value of productive forestry, the circularity of forest products, the importance of tree planting to meet future demand for housing and the UK&#8217;s net-zero climate commitments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AFPA is now pushing for an increased plantation estate &#8220;alongside a strong native sector will be critical for Australia to meet its net zero goals while contributing to the global climate change fight,&#8221; Ms Sikman said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At a time when demand for timber is surging, Australia&#8217;s plantation estate is in decline, with the national estate now the smallest it has been for more than 20 years.&nbsp; The Australian government published the latest data through the Australian Bureau of Agricultural Economics (ABARES).
